11. The Complex Sentence with Anticipation

My sentence:

As night ends and the sun begins to lighten the world, she retreats, once again, into shadowland.

Other Examples:

"If you have something of importance to say, for God's sake start at the end."

Sara Jeannette Duncan (1861-1922), the first woman to work in the editorial department of a leading Canadian newspaper, wrote numerous plays and novels. By using anticipating, she increases the surprise humor at the end of the statement. The reader doesn't realize the statement is humorous until the very last word.

"As that day would turn out, my sister Rachel became (briefly) a vegetarian."

Barbara Kingsolver, The Poisonwood Bible

This is another example of anticipation leading into surprise, although, in this case, the surprise is not so much that Rachel becomes a vegetarian, but that her conversion is of such brief duration.
