19. Representative Series Sentence - Five Part
My sentence:
Deserted, heartsick, bereft, lonely, pathetic and ever oh-so-blue, Sparky laid his head
upon his paws prepared to await forever his masters' return.
Other Examples:
"And thus the work proceeds; the two tackles hoisting and lowering simultaneously; both whale and windlass heaving, the heavers singing, the blubber room gentlemen coiling, the mates scarfing, the ship straining and all hands swearing occasionally."
Herman Melville, Moby Dick the White Whale
The "Pequod" is a beehive of activity when processing a dead whale. In this example, there are six main clauses in the representative series. To me, the listing of the many duties depicts a sense of controlled activity rather than of humor (although there may be some of that as well.) The short main clauses are also examples of parallelism, all in the order: subject followed by verb.
"It was a one-eyed one-horned flying purple people eater."
S. Wooley, lyrics to Purple People Eater
This sentence definitely moves into the comical arena with its five adjectives.
