Iona the cabman, whose son has recently died, tries to share his sorrow with this
evening's fares, but no one is interested. No one wants to hear an old cabman's
story of grief; no one cares or recognizes his need to talk. So, Iona returns to the
yard where the other cabbies sleep. One cabbie awakens briefly, but falls asleep
again before Iona can begin his tale. Iona walks out to check on his mare, where
he finally has someone to tell.
