Ordinarily upon encountering another whaler at sea, a ship would
spend time exchanging information, newspapers and letters.
However, during its turbulent sail around the Cape of Good Hope,
the "Pequod" is passed by the "Albatross", whose travel-worn
sailors remain eerily silent, even when asked if they've seen the
White Whale. This silence is viewed as an ominous omen by the
sailors on the "Pequod."
